Legong Dance | Bali Spectacular Traditional Performances

Legong Dance is a classical Balinese dance that was originally developed in Pelitan Village, Ubud, Gianyar Regency. This dance was originally performed to entertain the king and his family. Legong is derived from two words. "Leg" which means flexible and "Gong" which means the Gamelan, therefore the meaning of Legong is a movement that is bound or affected by the accompany of a Gamelan. Legong dance has a very complex motion, it is characterized with intricate finger movements, complicated footwork and expressive facial expressions.


The story  is about a prince of Sukwati fell ill and had a dream about two maidens danced to Gamelan music. When he recovered, he arranged and made two maidens dance in reality. But others believe that Legong is originated by a ceremony involving two girls by beneficent spirits. Legong is also danced at public festivals.

The dance is performed by three dancers in glittering costumes. A female attendant of the court, two identically dressed Legongs who adopts the role of royal persons. Legong dancers have to learn the basic move start from the training of the posture, movements and mimicry.Legong dancers are usually girls who have not reached puberty. They begin training at about the age of five. The ancient Legong used to have a storyteller, but these days, they are only dance performances. Legong dance is danced regularly in various parts of Ubud, Gianyar regency.
