The Unique Funeral Tradition in Trunyan

Trunyan is one of the villages located on the edge of Lake Batur, Kintamani District, Bangli District. Trunyan Village has a unique tradition that local people have done from the past until now, which is to burial the corpse by lying on the ground and left to rot. It is a secret tourist attraction that no much published on Bali's tourism yet.




The position of the corpse lined up with the others, complete with cloth wrapping as body armor at the time of the procession. That looks just woven triangular bamboo. Woven bamboo in the shape of a triangle is meant to protect the corpse from wild animals. Because Taru Menyan tree makes the corpse does not smell bad. Taru Menyan tree means “Taru” which means tree and “Menyan” which means scent.


   

Trunyan has three types of cemeteries
In Trunyan has three types of a cemetery that is Sema Wayah which is intended for someone who died naturally, Sema Muda is intended for babies, and Sema Bantas is a grave intended for someone who died by accident. Visitors, both local and foreign, are free to take photos of where the skull was laid. Around the cemetery, there will be a lot of bones from a long-decaying corpse in the cemetery and visitors are free to touch the bone. When passing Trunyan Village, visitors only reach about 15 minutes boat trip along the edge of Lake Batur. If passing the dock, visitors can take a boat trip about 45 minutes crossing Lake Batur. Visiting Trunyan can be a tour package when you are visiting Kintamani and Lake Batur. From every angle, Mount Batur will present its charms that hold a unique tradition. The bustle of people looking for fish and taking care of fish cages is the daily work of the local people there.
