Otonan | The Hindu's Balinese Birthday



Otonan – Balinese Birthday




If the people beyond Bali celebrate their birthday with a party, the Hindu Balinese celebrate their birthday with a ceremony. This ceremony is called Otonan or Ngotonin. Different with the birthday anniversary that using only the calculation of the date and month, Otonan conducted every 6 months (210 days) once by using the Balinese Calender calculation, 1 month = 35 days.


Otonan (birthday) is an immensely important celebration for the Hindu Balinese. It constitutes right moment to reorganize, encourage the relationship of human self with the four integrated companions as the otonan contains two dimensional aspects, both sekala (visible) and niskala (invisible). By this, it is also expected to promote harmony between the body with soul and finally reach eternal bliss here and after.
Otonan is a day when Balinese aware of their self. A Balinese mother always remember when her child’s otonan is though the mother is illiterate she can count correctly when the day of otonan is. The fundamental purpose of an otonan is to purify and convey spiritual strength.


Balinese don’t celebrate their birthdays with cake, candles and presents and there are no formal invitations. Instead, the family makes offerings called natab and the person whose birthday it is will pray for health, happiness and guidance amidst wafts of ritual smoke. At the end of the ceremony, a piece of white cotton called benang sri datu is tied around the person’s right wrist, hung over the ears and one is placed on the head. These all fall off in time. Whilst on the body, they are said to protect the wearer from negative influences such as demons known as butha-kala.

Prambanan Temple in Yogyakarta

Prambanan Temple or  local people called Loro Jonggrang Temple is the biggest Hindu's temple in Indonesian with an area of 39,8 ha, it located in Prambanan Village, Sleman Regency, Yogyakarta. It is about 17 kilometers away from Yogyakarta City or 7 kilometers away from Adisuciptjo International Airport.


Prambanan Temple is as symbols Trimurthi, 3 Gods of Hindu namely Brahma, Wisnu and Siwa. It has unique architecture and very important to visit if vacate to Yogyakarta because it is one of the most beautiful temples in Shouteast Asia. This temple is including in the world heritage by UNESCO has 240 temples, such as :

  4. 4 Kelir Temples

Existing reliefs in Prambanan Temple tell Ramayana's story, there are the Prince Rama with his wife, Sita against Rahwana.
The best way to explore the Prambanan Temple is walk while enjoying the scenery architecture and design temple.
Besides this temple has unique architecture, it has a beautiful park around the temple that can add interesting value for Prambanan Temple.
In Pengrupukan day, usually visitors specially Hindus people come to Prambanan Temple for pray and watching Ogoh-Ogoh parade as a series Silent Day or 'Nyepi'.
So, Prambanan Temple be the most tourist destination in Yogyakarta with Borobudur Temple.The entrance fee to Prambanan Temple is Rp 30.000 for adult and Rp 12.500 for child.

Padmasana Balinese Shrine

Padmasana is a Balinese Hindu temple. It is a shrine to Hindu people of Bali to worship Ida Sang Hyang Widhi Wasa (God). Padmasana is the symbol and image of macrocosm or the Bhuana Agung (the universe). Padmasana can be found in all Hindu Buildings all around Indonesia. Padmasana comes from Kawi language (old Javanese) it is derived by two words, Padma means lotus flower or center and Asana means seat or throne. The meaning of Padmasana is the image of universe (macrocosm) which is Sthana (a place to stay) of Ida Sang Hyang Widhi Wasa (God). The main function of Padmasana is is a place to worship Almighty God. The symbols on a Padmasana represents the natural levels that Hindu people believe as Tri loka. Tri Loka consists of Bhur Loka (earth), Bwah Loka (atmosphere) and Swah Loka (heaven). This symbol can be seen from Bedawang Nala (big turtle in Hindu mythology) with Antaboga and Basuki (two dragons).

Padmasana consists of 3 main parts. The foot is called Tepas, the body is called Batur and the Head is called Saris.
  • The foot (as the base) there are Bedawang Nala, Antaboga dragon and the Basuki dragon carving. There are also carvings of lotus flowers.
  • The body (as the center) there is a many types of carvings. The main carving is The Astadikapala Gods (guardian of 8 cardinal directions).
  • The Head (Sari) there is a throne made out of carved stones.
Based on the location, Padmasana is distinguished by direction of winds into 9 types.
