Three Sacred Animal in Three Awesome Village

Bali is the best place for spending your holiday. This Paradise Island has amazing panorama of nature, awesome culture, sensational food and friendly local people. Bali also offers unique village, those are Tenganan, Taro, Petulu. Those called by the unique villages because it be the place of sacred animal. The societies believe that animal as sacred animal and they don’t allowed hurting or slaughtering it. There are 3 villages with their sacred animal; 

White Cow in Taro Village 

Taro Village is located in Tegalalang District, Gianyar Regency. It will take 1.5 hours, if you stay in Kuta area or 45 kilometers. Taro Village also called by the village of white cow. The cow in Taro Village is different than the other cow in Indonesia. The characterized of this cow is has white leather and feather, the iris is limpid, the color of horn is more faded than the other, and can’t be exposed direct sunlight. Local people called this cow with Taro’s Cow which is the endemic from Taro Village. This unique cow having become a tourist attraction throughout the country is so far still well preserved. Even, one of the ancestral heritages is highly trustworthy because it is believed as the vehicle of Lord Shiva. Existence of this animal is purified by local community. Even, they are given a special nickname. For bulls, they are called Ida Bagus Lanang, while the heifers are called Si Luh. It is said the white cow is the descendant of the Nandini cow. To Balinese people, it poses a complementary means of ceremonies called Ngasti. To preserve the population, the local community is now building a cage for maintaining their health. This rare animal is made a space within an area of 5 hectares as its native habitat. The making of cage also poses the arrangement for the convenience of visitors who want to see the existence of the native animal to Taro village.

Petulu is the Heron Village 

The herons has been nested since 1965 and initially only 5 herons. Every month, the populations of herons grow faster and they breed in there. At first, they are immigration from the other place and come to this village and stay in there. The local people disturbed with this condition, they catch and the heron. But after catching the heron, the local people felt not comfortable, because they are visited by big scary ghost in their dream or the reality. So, the local people ask to Pendanda (Balinese Clergyman) and conduct a ritual. When the ritual is beginning, the clergyman is trance and told if the heron is rancang (guard) of God who worshiped in Desa Temple (temple set up in village). The herons are as the niskala guard (invisible guard) and protect the village from pest in the rice field. After people making a monument in the Desa Temple as offerings to heron, the village become prosperous, the harvest is abundant and there is no pests threaten until today. The Petulu’s heron has white color and brown in back and face. They live on the trees which along of road till in front of Desa Temple. You will find them in sasih kelima until sasih kesanga (Balinese mouth) or October-March. The herons will nest and keep their children on that period. On April-September, you also find them, but the population less than October-March. I suggest you to visit this unique place at 5 pm, because they come back from finding food. Don’t forget to wear hat, to cover your head from the heron’s feces. If you are lucky, you will see 2 black herons. According the local people they are the leader of thousand of herons.

Sacred Buffalo in Tenganan Village

While walking in Tenganan Village, Karangasem Regency, you will find a line of local people's house neatly, awesome gringsing cloth and amazing culture. Beside of that, this village gives you something new, its sacred buffalo. The buffalo does not have cage and roam freely. Mammal is so freely walking in the yard of the village. The local societies believe that there are ngangonang (herding) these sacred animals. Therefore the local society cannot keep and feed it anymore, because they can find some food by itself. The local society did not disturb the tranquility of sacred buffaloes. If it broke yard of local people house, the society will throw it out. To ensure no interference to the buffaloes, the village also has awig-awig (traditional rule). The societies not allow tending their pets in the yard of the village. This rule is still maintained by the society until today.

Mepandes, The Unique Hindhu Ceremony in Bali

"Potong Gigi” (Mepandes) ceremony can be found in "Kalapati" manuscript. In short, it states that there are six teeth in the upper jaw that are scoured by using gerigi, namely the two canine teeth and four incisors. It symbolized the self-awareness to control the "Sadripu" (the six enemies) in human soul. Those are "Kama" (desire), "Lobha" (greedy), "Krodha" (furiousity), "Mada" (intoxicated) "Moha" (swollen), and "Matsarya" (jealousy). 

The uncontrolled "Sadripu" will endanger the human’s life. That is the reason why it becomes the parents’ responsibility to suggest the child and wish to "Hyang Widhi" to be avoided from the affect of "Sadripu". The meaning is implicitly sates in "Kala Pati", "Kala Tatwa" and "Semaradhana" mythology that human must aware in his life. It is important in order not to get lost or far from his religion teaching (dharma) so that the holy spirit can reach the heaven together with the ancestors’ spirit become in unity with Brahman (Hyang Widhi).The "Semaradana" also rules the relationship between man and woman must stay in line with the norm. The “Potong Gigi” ceremony is usually conducted together with the "Ngeraja sewala" ceremony or normally called the "Menek Kelih" that is a ceremony to show the appreciation to God because the child has become mature, leave the childhood and become teenager.

THE STEPS OF "MEPANDES" CEREMONY

1. Those who have the mepandes are purified with "padudusan madya" after the priest doing the "ngarga tirta", "mereresik" and "mapiuning" at "Sanggar Surya". Soon after that, they will worship the "Hyang Raditya" for safeties in conducting the ceremony.

2. The hairs will be cut and the body is painted with holy letters by using special ink which is called "mererajah". The purpose is to purify the body and to sign the changing of the status from tender age to teenager.

3. Get into the bad where the "mepandes" is conducted, but before that the person must step on the "caru" as the symbol of harmonious, tap the crow bar three times (Ang-Ung-Mang) as the symbol of "Hyang Widhi’s" power, and the left armpit nips "caket" as the symbol of the doubtfulness to be aware of "Sadripu".

4. During the "mepandes" ceremony, the water which is used to gargle is thrown into a "kelungah nyuh gading" (young yellowish coconut) in order not to create "keletehan" (make the surrounding in dirt).

5. "Mepedamel" is derived from the word “dama” which means wisdom. The purpose of "mepedamel" after "mepandes" is in order the child will became a wisdom child during and teen age and so forth, stand to face the happiness and sadness of life, stay in line with Hindu religious teaching, has wide perspective, and has strong self confidence to decide on something and know how to differentiate "dharma" and "adharma".

The following are the symbolization of activities that are held in mepedamel:

• The person wears white fabric, yellow “kampuh”. and “samara-ratih” bandoleer as the symbol of God “Semara” and Godess “Ratih” (based on Semaradhana manuscript)
• Wearing “pawitra yarn” which has tridatu colors (red, white, and black) as the symbol of personal band toward the religious norms.
• Testing the “Sad Rasa” (six flavor) , bitter  and sour as the symbol to become tough in facing the life which unpleasant sometimes; spicy  as the symbol to become not to get angry easily when experiencing or hearing unpleasant things; sepet (casquette ) as the symbol to be obedient toward the rules or norms; salty as the symbol of wisdom, always try to increase the knowledge quality by studying; sweet as the symbol of  physically and spiritually happiness  life.

6. “Natab banten”. The purpose is to wish for bless from “Hyang Widhi” so the real aims of the ceremony could be achieved.

7. “Matapak”. Spiritually, the parents’ responsibilities toward the child start from fetus until mature has been accomplished. It also symbolized the appreciation of the child to the parents because they already take good care of him/ her, asks for forgiveness from the parents because of the fault, and also wish for their bless in order to be success in facing the life in the future.

8. “Persembahyangan” (worshiping) to worship “Hyang Widhi”.

Mepeed Tradition | Balinese Parade

The Unique of Mapeed Traditions

This is the one of Balinese Parade called Mapeed. It is the unique things that you can see in Bali. Mapeed held by the Balinese women in white or yellow kebaya because that colour is symbolizing purity, lined up long with fruits arrangement of offerings towering on its head.

 Mapeed is taken from word ‘peed’ means ‘like a parade‘. This tradition has already existed since 1711. It is a manifestation of Balinese Hindus gratitude to the God..Now, it has become a cultural heritage from generation to generation . Mapeed usually held on the village while the Balinese ceremony.Married women do their hair is a style called sanggul. 

Mapeed usually accompanied by Balinese marching or gongs, drums and cymbals called baleganjur which they can walk more than 1 km distance.The procession is always keep by Balinese security or called Pecalang who usually wearing the combine of black and white uniforms.The arrangement of towering fruits that they bring on its head called Gebogan. Fruits, flowers and cakes arranged in  a kind of tray called Dulang. It has a high average of 1 meter and make Mapeed Balinese parade is so amaze and interest to see.

After the Mapeed procession done or they arrived at the temple , the woman who be a participants will help by the Balinese holy peolpe called Pemangku to take the Gebogan into the holy place. And after purifying with the holy water called Tirtha, then the ceremony begins.
