Uluwatu Temple

Uluwatu Temple or Pura Luhur Uluwatu is a famous Balinese sea temple in Bali. It is one of nine directional temples of Bali, its meant to protect Bali From evil spirit. This spectacular temple is one to marvel with as it perched at the edge of the rock overlooking to the sea. The name Luhur means "something of divine origin" and Ulu meant "land's end" and Watu meant "rock" in the old language. The name itself had aptly describe what this special temple is all about. Pura Luhur Uluwatu is regarded as one of the six most important temples in Bali along with Pura Besakih. The inner sanctum of the Pura (Temple) is perched at the edge of a steep cliffs which tower over Bali's legendary surf breaks at the south. Most travelers enjoy the view of this temple from two different vantage points, from both northern and southern part of the area.

This is very popular place to enjoy the sunset. Everyday at sunset, the Kecak Dance performance is held here at the Pura Luhur Uluwatu. Pura Luhur Uluwatu is inhabited by large number of monkeys, who are extremely adept at snatching your belonging, including bags, cameras, and eyeglasses. Keep a very close grip on all your belongings including eyeglasses if possible. If you do have something taken, you can usually "make a deal" with the monkeys and exchange some fruit of your belongings. If you offer some locals or even the Pura Luhur Uluwatu priests a tip they will be happy to do keep the monkeys away from you.
