Lawar - a Balinese Mix of Flavor

Lawar is a traditional food originating from Bali, Indonesia. It is well known all over Bali and are available in many Balinese restaurants. It is a dish created by a mixture of vegetables, chopped meat, spices, coconut and some types of lawar even add meat blood with some spices and herbs to add the taste. Vegetables which can be used to cook Lawar are normally young bean fruit and Jack fruit. It should be consumed immediately because this food spoils very easily, in about half a day Lawar will go bad and not good to be consumed.


There are various types of Lawar based on the material and ingredients. Red Lawar and white Lawar are types of it named according to its color. Red Lawar usually use meat blood as the basic material while white Lawar usually use coconut as the main material. Lawar Babi or Pork Lawar is made of pork meat, Lawar Nangka or Jack fruit Lawar is made of Jack fruit and Padamare Lawar is a combination of several types of Lawar. It is best served with steamed rice and some other side dishes. It is the most favorite food that is cooked during religious ceremony and family occasion. If there is a ceremony or any traditional Balinese event, Lawar will always be one of the side dishes. Lawar is not only popular among the locals, it is also popular among tourists that visit Bali. Tourist who visit Bali for a holiday or vacation should try this delicious dish before leaving the island.
