Kehen Temple an Impressive Temple in East Bali

Kehen Temple or Pura Kehen is an impressive temple situated in Cempaga Village, Bangli Regency. It is about 43 kilometers away from Denpasar City. Kehen Temple is said to be one of the most impressive and beautiful temple in Bali due to its location which is located on a wooded hillside about 2 kilometers north of the town center. Most people who comes to Bangli is to visit this temple, it is one of the favorite temple among foreign tourists. This temple is also said to be the miniature version of Besakih Temple which also has 8 terraces.


The temple was built in the 11th century during the reign of Sri Bhatara Guru Adikunti Ketana. The name Kehen is taken from the word "Keren" which means flame. Kehen Temple is known as Hyang Api (God of fire) temple, it is belived that Brahman is the God who protects the temple. Before reaching the beautiful temple, visitors must climb up 38 stairs, along the stairs, there are guardian statues taken from the Ramayana Epics. In the middle courtyard there are shrines where Balinese Hindu come and pray while on the top or the highest courtyard, visitors get to see 11 tiered Meru with carved wood and stone base. In the northern courtyard, there is a beautiful carved lotus throne which is dedicated to the three Hindu Gods, Brahma, Shiva and Vishnu.Many religious ceremonies are taken place in Kehen Temple. A big ceremony which is celebrated every 3 years called Ngusabha is held in this temple.
