Le Mayeur Museum a Belgian Heritage

Le Mayeur Museum is a museum located in the Sanur Beach region, Denpasar City. This museum contains Adrein-Jean Le Mayeur's artwork as well as his collection of traditional Balinese art. Adrien-Jean Le Mayeur de Merpres is a descendant of a Belgian nobleman born in Brussels on the 9th of February 1880. His parents prohibited him to develop his painting talent so Le Mayeur decided to leave his family. In 1932 he arrived in a harbour in Singaraja City, he continued his journey to Denpasar. At the beginning, Le Mayeur's plan was to stay in the island for 8 months but he fell in love with the beautiful nature and cultures of Bali and decided to live along the coast of Sanur Beach. Le Mayeur then married Ni Nyoman Pollok, a Legong dancer who was also his model for his paintings.

Most of Le Mayeur's painting bring up the theme of natural panorama, cultural expressions and the beauty of Balinese ladies. According to the testament written in 1957 it is concerned that if Le Mayeur and his wife Ni Pollok pass away, his house will be given to the government as a Museum. Inside the museum, visitors get to see various paintings and artworks by Le Mayeur and Le Mayeur's historical objects such as chairs, carved tables, wardrobes, clay pots, silverware, books and statues.

Approximately, there are about 88 paintings by Le Mayeur, it is estimated that the painting was painted between 1921 to 1957. What makes the painting unique and interesting is that not all of his paintings are painted on a canvas, some were painted on hardboard, triplex, paper and sackcloth. The Le Mayeur museum is opened from 08:00am until 15:00pm on Saturdays to Thursdays, 08:00am until 12:30pm on Fridays and the museum is closed on national holidays.
