Margarana Monument Park - Feel the Struggle of Balinese People

Margarana National Monument Park is a park that memorialize the sacrifice of the Balinese people towards the Independence of Indonesia after the second World War. The park is located in Marga Village, Marga sub district, Tabanan Regency. I Gusti Ngurah Rai, one of the greatest hero in the Balinese history who fought the Dutch were killed together with his 96 men. His last stand was on the 20th of November 1946 in the village of Margarana and is known as "Puputan Margarana" (fight to death). Ngurah Rai was the spirit of the Balinese resistance and this monument park is dedicated to all of the Balinese fighters who lost their lives in the name of freedom between 1945 to 1950. Therefore, there are tomb of heroes lied on the park to honor the heroes who died in the war of independence.

The monument is lied on a 9 hectare land which is divided into 3 courts (Tri Mandala concept). 
  • The first court (upstream) has a total area of 4 hectares, it consists of several buildings. The buildings include: The Temple of Heroes Margarana a 17 meters tall stately sculpture, Court of Ceremony, Statue of Panca Bakti, Taman Bahagia where the tombs of the hero lies, Historical Building a place where objects that are used during the struggle is stored and a Sacred garden where visitors can perform a worship.
  • The second court (Middle) has an area of 1 hectare, in this court there is a Wantilan (hall) where visitors can sit and have a rest, there are several food stalls provided and a souvenir shop is planned to be built in this court.
  • The last court (downstream) also has a total area of 4 hectares it is an open park and an Earth Youth Camps are planned to be built.

Margarana National Monument Park is often visited by domestic visitors and school students from all regions of Indonesia but sadly, it only receives little foreign visitors. This park is actually a great park to visit, visitors can honor heroes and see how hard Ngurah Rai and the Balinese people struggled for freedom.

1 Minute of Prayer at Ground Zero Bali


After the first Bali Bombing on 12 October 2002 in Kuta , a permanent Memorial Monument, Ground Zero Monument was built on the site of destroyed pub in Legian street. This Memorial Monument was made on the second anniversary of the Bali bombing on 12 October 2004. It is made on an intricately carved stone set with a large marble plaque with names and the nationalities of the Bali bombing victims. There are 202 death victims from 24 countries in this bombing tragedy. The monument is well maintained and illuminated at night.

The dedication of the Memorial Monument included a Balinese Hindu ceremony and gave an opportunity for people to lay flowers and other offerings. The ceremony was attended by the Indonesian officials and the Australian ambassador as most of the victims were Australian. Many tourists and visitors come to Bali to visit this Memorial Monument in Legian. Some of the families of the victims visit this monument regularly to give prayer for their family and other victims. Other visitors and tourist from all over the world also come and pray for the victims of the Bali bombing, some people also lay flower at the monument to show their respect and condolences for the victims.

Bajra Sandhi Monument Bali's Historical Site


Bajra Sandhi monument is a monument located in front of the Bali Governor's office in Renon, Denpasar. This monument is dedicated to immortalize the struggle of Balinese from time to time during 3000 BC. The great pillar arises above 45 meters to symbolize the indonesian independence. Inside the monument there are many miniature scenes of Balinese people over the years. The entrance fee to Bajra Sandhi is Rp 10.000, opened from 8:30-16:30 and closed during Hindu holidays. The monument is surrounded by a very large park, it is known as the city park by the locals. The park is popular and used for many occasion for the locals such as sport activities and some other local events.

The monument is divided into 3 areas (Tri Mandala)
  1. Utama Mandala: is the main building in the middle.
  2. Madya Mandala: is the courtyard that surrounds Utama mandala
  3. Nista Mandala: is the outer courtyard surrounding Madya mandala
The main building (Utama Mandala) consists of three floors. Utamaning Utama Mandala, is placed on the third floor of the monument. Visitors can see a great view of Denpasar from this floor. Madyaning Utama Mandala, is placed on the second floor. In this floor, Visitors can see 33 different miniature of Balinese people's struggle. Nistaning Utama Mandala is the ground floor of the building. In the ground floor, there are information room, exhibit rooms, and conference room.
